In a recent monthly newsletter, I posed a question and asked for your thoughts on the Presidential race and the current "treatment" of President Barack Obama.
Read for yourself some of the responses we got to Steve Harvey and Tom Joyners' commentaries.
Most of you KNOW, that Tom Joyner is NOT one of my favorite black 'leaders'! However, he is 1000% RIGHT on this one!! WE [ALL PEOPLE] NEED TO PUT ASIDE 'DIVISIVE' PETTINESS, AND RE-ELECT PRESIDENT Obama!!
LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE!! DOES THE COUNTRY NEED 4 MORE YEARS OF REPUBLICANS' DEREGULATION OF BIG BUSINESSES?! THE PLANTATION OWNERS WANT THEIR COUNTRY BACK!! THAT IS WHY UNIONS ARE BEING BUSTED, SALARIES ARE BEING CUT, BENEFITS ARE BEING GUTTED!! WHITE MAN, IF YOU DON'T OWN A PLANTATION, YOU'RE IN THE SAME STRUGGLE AS THE BLACK MAN!! DON'T CUT OFF YOUR NOSE TO SPITE YOUR FACE, HATING BLACK PEOPLE!! THIS IS NOT ABOUT RACE!!IT IS ABOUT THE "HAVES" AGAINST THE "HAVE NOTS"!! STOP RE-ELECTING THOSE WHO DON'T WANT THE WORKING CLASS TO HAVE ANYTHING!!
JUST SAY "NO" TO BACK TO THE PLANTATION, ALL NON PLANTATION OWNERS!! WAKE UP, Family!! Tom Joyner is right, this time!
TOM JOYNER on President Obama
We've all expressed our opinions, vented, aired it out, and in my heart of hearts, no matter how we got to this point, I believe most of us share a common goal - to re-elect President Obama. That can only happen if we take all the time and energy we've been using to debate, defend - and yes, digress (Tavis didn't patent that word, did he?) and move forward. Like the mamas on my staff tell their little boys when they're distracted by whatever is on the PSP, DS or Wii screen, "Let's focus." If we can learn anything from Republicans, it is that they have the ability to not just rally together, but to grab onto a single candidate, issue, piece of propaganda, whatever, and clamp down like a pit bull. Once they make a decision, they will not be swayed. How many times have you listened to one of them recite the party line, and you think to yourself, I KNOW they don't really believe that? Maybe not, but by being consistent and steady until the end, they come out victorious - or, at the least, united. That's what we need to do more. Of course, we are not all "like minded" across the board, and no one is expected to believe that every single thing that President Obama says or does is perfect and beyond reproach. But, let's look at the big picture and remember that if he's going to win, he needs all of our votes - every last one of them. At one time, I didn't see the harm in the public criticisms from black leaders, but a conversation I had with a friend and colleague who voted for Obama last time around made me think differently. This guy is black, high school-educated and gets most of his news from our show, CNN, MSNBC and C-SPAN. A few weeks ago, when Tavis Smiley and Cornel West began to make the rounds on the cable networks, he started to have second thoughts about Obama. He actually began to let the negativity seep into his brain and said, "What IS Obama doing for Black people? Look at how many of us are unemployed; he's not doing nothing about that." That's when I knew that more harm was being done than some people realize. Keep in mind, that was just one person who happened to express his opinion to me. How many more black people will stay home from the polls this November because they think the prez is turning his back on black people? Forget that that's a lie - that he has done plenty for African-Americans and will do more if he gets the chance to serve another term. Forget that bin Laden was captured and killed under his watch. Let's not even deal with the facts right now. Let's deal with just our blackness and pride - and loyalty. We have the chance to re-elect the first African-American president, and that's what we ought to be doing. And I'm not afraid or ashamed to say that as black people, we should do it because he's a black man. There are a great number of people who are against him because he's a black man. That should be enough motivation for us to band together and get it done. I'll be making an announcement soon about voter registration and what we'll do on the TJMS to make sure that everybody is ready come November. In the meantime, we need to start showing the same kind of enthusiasm as we did when we were electing the president ....... the first time. Please don't think it's going to be any easier because we made it happen before. In fact, this time it will be harder. For years, I've heard people who weren't around during the civil rights movement say that they wished they had been there. They have a deep need to be a part of some great historic moment that will make a difference, not just to us but to future generations as well. Well, this is our moment. And before I hear the haters say President Obama is no Dr. Martin Luther King, of course he isn't. There will never be another Dr, King, Malcolm X, JFK ... and there doesn't need to be. We're not dwelling on the past - not 50 years ago, not even 50 days ago. Whether you're in a race to the finish line, the goal post or to making history, you've got to keep your eye on the prize if you're going to win. The naysayers have a vested interest in chunking rocks. We can't stop that. What's our interest? What are we willing to stand up for, fight for, make a sacrifice for? When is the last time we did more than talk about how much we support the president? When is the last time you mailed a check to his campaign? When you hear people who claim to represent you and black America saying things you don't believe or support, you ought to light up the phones, send emails, tweets, write blogs, fax. Every little bit helps. Don't let hate, pettiness, jealousy, whatever, overshadow truth. We're on a mission, and a mission isn't always fun, sexy or comfortable. When you step out there and believe in what you say and what you do, you've got to take the heat and keep it moving. In the words of that great philosopher Jay-Z, on to the next. Focus on November. We're moving forward. Can we do it together? That's the only way we will be victorious.
When I saw the issue regarding Steve Harvey’s comment in your newsletter, I could not over look it with out comment. I had no prior knowledge of Mr. Harvey’s comment, so I had to do some research. I have always respected Steve Harvey as a man who has both publicly and privately admitted when he was wrong about one thing or another. To me that shows integrity in a man. However, Mr. Harvey should have done his homework before commenting on Tavis and Cornell. Don’t get me wrong, he makes some good points, but I don’t think he sees the big picture here. Was he aware that Rev. Jesse Jackson also did a poverty tour around the same time as Tavis and Dr. West, who paid for his tour? Let's be real....Tavis Smiley is not someone I have ever admired. In my opinion although he means well, he appears to be someone looking for fame rather than educating or helping African Americans. I like Dr. West because I have seen him speak on several occasions and he’s always well versed and more importantly he is fearless when it comes to calling a spade a spade whether you agree with him or not.President Obama is a Christian man, and Christians are called to be fair as well as humble, but not weak!!! You can’t bring a knife to a gun fight, but he’s learning that after the many beating he has endured. As President he’s held to the same scrutiny and criticism as all who came before him. Mr. Harvey may be very surprised to know that a lot of our black leaders have also criticized President Obama on his “hushness” towards African Americans. Prof. Eric Dyson, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Jounalist Roland Martin, the list goes on. So, this is not about Tavis Smiley and Dr. West their small potatoes in a big pot!Sure, Obama wants to help African American’s, the problem is that “its on the down low” and many African American’s educated, uneducated, rich or poor either don’t understand or don't agree with that. Over the years, we have learned to put our faith in the type of leaders who are fearless such as the one we are memorializing this October 2011. Dr. King preached equality for all men while fighting for African Americans loud and proud. Thanks for allowing me a voice.
The Great Black Vote Video is a very provocative and poignant video with stirring images of the civil rights era fight for equality in the US. Don't let their struggle be in vain. REGISTER AND VOTE!
Many people wonder why some are so hard on President Obama. Did Frederick Douglass predict the answer many years ago?
“Though the colored man is no longer subject to barter and sale, he is surrounded by an adverse settlement which fetters all his movements.
In his downward course he meets with no resistance, but his course upward is resented and resisted at every step of his progress.
If he comes in ignorance, rags and wretchedness he conforms to the popular belief of his character, and in that character he is welcome; but if he shall come as a gentleman, a scholar and a statesman, he is hailed as a contradiction to the national faith concerning his race, and his coming is resented as impudence.
In one case he may provoke contempt and derision, but in the other he is an affront to pride and provokes malice.”
The following is a message from Al Sharpton to Herman Cain.
The greeting on your website says, "We are looking forward to hearing from you", but I'm not sure you will be looking forward to hearing from me, Mr. Cain. I saw on the Internet that you called the President a liar. I deplore what you are doing and the things you are saying about the President in order to gain favor with these greedy, thieving, selfish, Republicans. How dare you call President Obama a liar? You are a pathetic, obviously brainwashed black man who has lost his way and his mind. You have had the opportunity and a smattering of privilege in America that has made you forget your roots. I despise people like you and Clarence Thomas, and you both have Georgia roots.
What is it with you black men from the south who grow up in an oppressed environment and end siding with the oppressor? The recent case of Troy Davis in Georgia is an excellent example of the present day oppression and legal lynching that still takes place in that state and in this country.
The political party that you praise so highly is presently enacting laws to suppress the black vote, the student vote, and many elderly voters across this entire country. Yet, you choose to stand with people who display such obscene and un-American behavior. You would throw black people (including the President of the U.S.) and others under the bus to carry favor with these non-caring and hedonistic people.
You were there when your Republican cohorts cheered about the death penalty which disproportionately affects black men and women in this country - some of whom have been proven to be innocent. You should be ashamed to stand with these people and yet, you appear to be proud of such an association.
Yes, President Obama does believe in fairness and sharing the responsibility of the tax burden, it is not socialism nor is it class warfare, and he is not a liar for saying it. That kind of rhetoric from you and those with whom you identify is nothing more than a weak defense for the greedy and despicable philosophy that you choose to embrace.
You had the unmitigated gall to tell Wolf Blitzer on CNN that two thirds of African-American people are brainwashed and incapable of thinking for themselves. You are surely touched in the head. The millions of us who are capable of thinking for ourselves - we know who is really brainwashed - you - brainwashed whiter than snow. Do you really think those people with whom you stand on the debating platform really respect you and see you as their equal? They as well as others see you as a joke and a person who is engaging in buffoonery. A Republican majority House and Senate would never pass your "so called" 999 plan. They would never deem it in their best interest. Besides, there are many who believe your plan is a coded message from Satan. If you flip the numbers they become the 666 plan.
You will never be President of this country, and I thank God for that. I must say, you certainly live up to your last name. Just as Cain in the Bible so blatantly slew his brother, you are equally willing to do the same politically and economically to millions of black and middle class citizens of this country. Such behavior is extremely ugly, and need I remind you, Mr. Cain, that God does not like ugly.
P.S. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm having a nice day, I would tell you what I really think about you.
IF YOU ARE TIRED OF WHITE AND BLACK REPUBLICANS CALLING PRESIDENT OBAMA A LIAR - PLEASE FORWARD THIS SO OTHERS MAY KNOW THE TRUTH.
